Replaced a very corroded aluminum anode rod with this magnesium one and the difference is night and day. Aluminum rod was generating entirely too much "oxide" and it was constantly clogging aerators in the house. After flushing the water heater and installing this magnesium rod, I've seen no buildup of trash in the aerators. [...]

      This anode rod should be fine, as long as the extra 3" wouldn't prevent it from physically fitting inside the unit.

      It may work, as the threading for anode rods tends to be universal, but we couldn't say for sure. The shorter length would not be a problem, other than that the rod may not last as long.

      A:

      Magnesium isn't necessarily better. Magnesium anode rods usually come standard with water heaters, but aluminum rods are better for dealing with water that has a foul odor.
