[...] It's heavy and takes two people to move. All I needed was some 2 inch vent pipe and connections to the water lines. Plugs into an existing electric outlet so no wiring is involved. Gas connection was 3/4" CSST/PEX. Water connection from the tank was 3/4 copper to the shutoff valve then PEX. It came complete with everything else I needed. It took about 4 hours to install. Filled the tank, turned on the gas, switched the electric O/I switch on, set the water temperature and has hot water in an hour.If you can glue ABS and do a bit of soldering the average person should be able to install it.

Our water heater broke on a sunday and the guy was gung-ho about this water heater. It was almost $1,000 more than the 75 gal. powervent that we were going to go with, but he insisted that this was a better option due to recovery and efficiency. Well, I can tell you that I miss my 75 gal. heater. This does an ok job at keeping up with needs, but if 2 people take a shower at the same time, within 10 min the hot water starts to fall precipitously. I expected better performance for the price.

Great Water Heater

Comments about 50 Gallon - 76,000 BTU Vertex Power-Vent Residential Gas Water Heater:

So far after two weeks I have had no issues with family of four. Waiting for company to come and stay to see how it really performs. Set temp. one notch above recommended and it was almost to hot, afraid of kids getting accidently burned. Replaced 16 year old 50 gal power vent and it is a major improvement and also quieter. Shipping went smooth, installation was fairly easy.

Comments about 50 Gallon - 76,000 BTU Vertex Power-Vent Residential Gas Water Heater:

Great water tank and easily out performs my old 60 gallon unit. Its an excellent quality unit and I'm very satisfied so far. Its a simple design too so the potential for huge repairs is less likely (I hope). Its big and heavy though so be sure to get a furniture dolly to help you move it.Delivery was prompt and Pexsupply was great to deal with . A+++

More than hot water

Comments about 50 Gallon - 76,000 BTU Vertex Power-Vent Residential Gas Water Heater:

Quality construction and preformance.Heats as much hot water as our family of four can use and cranks out enough to floor heat a 18 x 20 back room. The GPHE 50 is equipped with inlet/outlet connections for limited space heating applications-works great! Less cost and more reliable than tankless designs. This water heater is like two for one hot water and space heat cant go wrong. Instlation is easy and muffler is included no additional charge. Instructions are complete with lots of illustrations.

Great Water Heater

Comments about 50 Gallon - 76,000 BTU Vertex Power-Vent Residential Gas Water Heater:

Pros: Quiet, quick at heating water, hardly ever runs

Cons: larger than our original 50 gallon unit so it was a very tight squeeze in our allotted space.

Installed this unit in an evening and had hot water withing 15 minutes of turning it on.

An excellent product.

Comments about 50 Gallon - 76,000 BTU Vertex Power-Vent Residential Gas Water Heater:

I was amazed how fast the first tank of cold water reached the setpoint temperature. The blower was very quiet compared with the former Ruud Direct Vent unit, which sound more like a grinder than a blower (good riddens!). We used to run out of hot water when filling a whirlpool tub, but no longer. The only negative is that the blower on my Vertex has an intermittant high pitch chirp, which I attribute to the shaft seal. If it does not "run in" then I will be looking for warranty replacement of the assembly.

You may want to note any error codes displayed on the unit and refer to them on pages 35 and 36 of the manual linked below. Problems with the pressure switch can cause the blower to run continuously.

  • 50 Gallon - 76,000 BTU Vertex Power-Vent Residential Gas Water Heater

    Q:

Hi Does this unit qualify for the NJ clean energy program rebate? It states..."Gas Water Heater with 90% or greater thermal efficiency with sealed combustion" I know it's 90% efficient but is it also a sealed combustion system?
Asked on 2/23/2012 by John from NJ

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

"Sealed combustion" generally refers to direct vent units. The GDHE-50 is the direct vent version of the Vertex. You may want to check with the state or utility company, however, regarding their specific definition.

Are there any other options other than a drain for the condensate line, like a bucket perhapse? I want to put this unit in the basement of my 50yo house and there are no floor drains.

No, without a drain, you cannot use this heater. Your other option is to build a sump pit and pump the water to a drain line.

Local rebates require an EF rating or Energy Factor, rather than thermal efficiency. Can you tell me the EF for the Vertex water heaters (both the 90 and 96 % units). I didn't see it on the spec sheet.

Energy Factor ratings are not available for tank-style water heaters with BTU inputs greater than 75,000 BTUs.
