More About Air Conditioners
An air conditioner, also known as the condenser unit, is the unit installed outside. Its key components include a fan motor, fan blade, compressor and a condenser coil in which the refrigerant flows through. The condenser unit compresses the refrigerant gas it receives from the compressor into a high pressure liquid as it flows through the outdoor coil. It works together with the indoor unit, known as the air handler. The liquid refrigerant transfers to the evaporator coil in the air handler, turning it into a low pressure gas while absorbing heat in the process. The air handler then circulate the conditioned air through the installed duct work. Units that come with either a heat pump or a heating furnace will deliver both cooled and hot air through the same duct work.
Split system home comfort systems use an indoor and outdoor unit to deliver comfortable air to a living environment. Split systems can be installed with units that require duct work to cool an entire home or building. They can also be installed with ductless units to cool or heat anywhere from one to four zones, depending on the number of indoor units installed. Ductless mini-split systems do not require duct work and can be installed for single zone or multi-zone applications. They come available as cool only units or with an optional heat pump for heating applications.
