Bradford White's high efficiency, energy saver, atmospheric vent residential gas water heater features the Defender Safety System® and offers additional insulation and integral heat traps to reduce stand-by heat loss.

Features:

  • Bradford White ICON System - Intelligent gas control with proven millivolt powered technology and built-in piezo igniter. A standard, off the shelf thermopile converts heat energy from the pilot flame into electrical energy to operate the gas valve and microprocessor. No need for external electricity.
    • Enhanced Performance - Proprietary algorithms provide enhanced First Hour Delivery ratings and tighter temperature differentials.
    • Advanced Temperature Control System - Microprocessor constantly monitors and controls burner operation to maintain consistent and accurate water temperature levels.
    • Intelligent Diagnostics - An exclusive green LED light prompts the installer during start-up and provides ten different diagnostic codes to assist in troubleshooting.
    • Pilot On Indication - Flashing green LED provides positive indication that pilot is on.
    • Separate Immersed Thermowell - High strength advanced polymer composite thermowell provides isolation between electric temperature sensor and surrounding water. No need to drain the tank when removing gas valve.
  • Advanced ScreenLok® Technology Flame Arrestor Design - Flame arrestor is designed to prevent ignition of flammable vapor outside of the water heater.
  • Resettable Thermal Switch - Proven and reliable bimetallic switch prevents burner and pilot operation in case of ongoing flammable vapor burn inside of the combustion chamber or restricted air flow.
  • Maintenance Free - No regular cleaning of air inlet openings or flame arrestor is required under normal conditions.
  • Sight Window - Offers a view into the combustion chamber to observe the operation of the pilot and burner.
  • Factory Installed Hydrojet® Total Performance System - Cold water inlet sediment reducing device helps prevent sediment build up in tank. Increases first hour delivery of hot water while minimizing temperature build up in tank.
  • Vitraglas® Lining - Bradford White tanks are lined with a exclusively engineered enamel formula that provides superior protection from the highly corrosive effects of hot water. This formula (Vitraglas®) is fused to the steel surface by firing at a temperature of over 1600ºF.
  • 2" Non-CFC Foam Insulation - Covers the side and top, reducing the amount of heat loss. This results in less energy consumption, improved operation efficiencies and jacket rigidity.
  • Pedestal Base.
  • Water Connections -3/4" NPT factory installed true dielectric fittings.
  • Factory Installed Heat Traps.
  • Protective Magnesium Anode Rod.
  • 3x4 "Snap Lock" Draft Diverter - Allows either 3" or 4" vent connections with inputs of 40,000 BTU/Hr or less.
  • T&P Relief Valve - Included.
  • Brass Drain Valve - Tamper proof design.

NOTE: May require the use of a lift gate. Please note the product weight listed in the specs

I bought this to fill my huge new jacuzzi bathtub and it works like a charm! It took only about 1 1/2 hours to install and fit my current size venting system. The plumber told me the only way to fill the tub with hot water was to get a tankless system, but this is not true. And...it was about $200 cheaper than the local hardware store price for same model.

I shopped this size water heater with energy star rating and found this to be best price especially with free shipping. I like the piezo ignition. Upon install, it started leaking from where the pipe connects to the WH to go to the over pressure valve. After wrapping it in 4 coats of plumbers tape it finally seemed to stop, but this is not what would be normally expected. So I still have reservations. [...]Next time I will pay a little more and buy local.

Great water heater!

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System High Efficiency Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

After doing a lot of research decided to buy this model to replace our 20-year old Ace water heater. We had an excellent local plumbing company that we trust come out to install it and it went in with no problems, even though it was a little bigger than our previous water heater (which was a 40-gal "shorty"). I had checked the dimensions before purchasing but had forgotten to account for the slightly larger diameter of the tank, and I'm glad it still fit with our gas main coming down from above!

The only slightly negative thing that happened was the pilot took about 5 tries to light initially, but once it was lit this water heater fired right up and we had hot water in about 45 minutes.

I initially had the thermostat set to the recommended "HOT" level, and this gave us REALLY hot water, so today I set it a smidge lower and we'll see how that works. I track our energy bills and will be curious to see if using this water heater lowers our natural gas "baseline" cost.

No problems, and looking forward to years of reliable hot-water!

Had a plumber friend install it in 30 minutes flat. Had hot water in 20 minutes. These heaters are the best and made in USA...providing jobs in America.
Quality built with pride. Last heater lasted 16 years, four kids, a ton of laundry and dirty dishes. Would buy another one in a heart beat.

Unlike some of the other reviews, I never had the pleasure of replacing my BW water heater. It was installed right before I brought the house in 1993 and it is still running. Just to be on the safe side, I just ordered a replacement (BW of course)to have it on standby. I know it is just a matter of time.

This came in packaged well. Did not care for the delivery service as they did not tie the unit down in the truck (at least for local transport) and did not use a tommy lift to get it out of the truck.Very easy hook up. Producing much need temp improvement compared to our last Bradford white (14 years old)

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System High Efficiency Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

I replaced our old water heater made by A.O.Smith with Bradford water heater that had identical pisitions for both water and gas connections so that I do not need to do any works to connect water or gas lines. The work to put it in service was very, very easy. I had some difficulties to start it going because the gas contorl was somewhat tricky. Other than that it has been working great.

Comments about 50 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Defender Safety System High Efficiency Residential Water Heater (Nat Gas):

I replaced my 13-year old 40 gallon Brandford White water heater with a 50 gallon. The 50 gallon isn't that much bigger. Called a plumber for installation. The water supply lines alligned perfectly with the old ones. The only adjustment is the gas supply line which was dropped 5" from the previous position. Pilot light ignited after the 5th try. Installation took about 2 hours which included draining the old tank.

    Q:

What benefit is a 50 gal tank at 50,000BTU over a 50 gal tank at 40,000BTU? (natural gas). Is there a substantial difference in operating costs?
Asked on 2/8/2012 by Anonymous from Minnesota

    2 answers

    • A:

The BTU rating refers to how much heat energy the water heater uses, so a 50,000 BTU unit can heat 50 gallons of water faster than a 40,000 BTU unit. To figure out if this would make sense in your situation, you have to decide if you want better performance or more energy savings. If you currently have a 50-gallon water heater and you're having problems not getting hot water, or the hot water runs out too quickly, you may want the higher BTU rating. However, a 40,000 BTU unit will be cheaper to operate since it uses less natural gas to heat the water. I don't know what the actual difference in cost would be, but since most water heaters last at least 7-10 years, even small differences in cost will add up over time to be quite significant. Look at the energy cost sticker on both units and that should give you a rough idea.

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The 50,000 BTU model would provide more hot water, but would also consume more fuel. We are not sure about the precise difference in operating costs, however.

Yes it can with 2 dielectric unions for copper supply lines. But check your local codes first since some municipalities don't allow pex pipe for plumbing.
