      I have not installed these yet, but when I do, I will first install a 1/2²
      pex adaptor and a short length of copper pipe. I would guess that when
      installed on a pex pipe only, that the joint will eventually leak. The
      adaptor and copper stub are cheap insurance.

      No, you need a pex to copper adapter in between. Pex stop valves exist,
      but I find them hard to mount rigidly and so prefer to use stub-out elbows
      and compression stop valves like this one.

      No this valve can only be used on 1/2" copper. You'd need a copper stub out
      attached to the pex pipe.

      I would not use a compression fitting directly on PEX piping. I would use
      a transition piece (brass fitting of some sort) and then connect to the
      stop valve from the brass fitting.

      Maybe, with a stiffener insert similar to poly, but I've never seen it done. I'd look into the manufacturer's listings for both PEX and the valves, which are who's, BrassCraft?
