Smart Pump

Comments about Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump:

I love the readout and flexibility of this pump. Knowing the GPM and the power usage was very useful in setting up my wood boiler and gauging it's performance. I would like more information on the "adapt" setting that adjusts to system needs. What criteria does it use? The "adapt" setting tended to run too slow for my wood boiler. It likes a higher flow to keep the temperature more even in the boiler tank to prevent creasote formation so I'm using the a speed control setting.
The first pump they sent was defective but PEX supply was very good at sending a replacement.

installs and works well

Comments about Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump:

I have a small house with modest heat loss.
4 GPM max with <2' head - so this pump is a bit overkill.
I just got the system fully running this weekend. The Alpha runs like magic:

I had all 9 actuators closed and then opened one (.3GPM flow) and the pump saw the pressure drop and pumped against it properly.

With all actuators operating, it ramped up/down fine.

Next generation circulator

Comments about Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump:

Replaced most of the circulator pumps for customer with central furnace for four sites and many zones. Customer wanted to reduce electricity use and make system more efficient. Installs same as regular pump. Allows balancing of complicated hydronic design and/or conflicting heat demands with the push of a button.
Saves energy, balances heat flows, simple to use, customer is very happy. What's not to like?

Brilliant!

Comments about Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump:

Pump allows manual or automatic adjustment to changing conditions. Lets me fine tune complex systems (e.g. wood boilers) instantly without needing to swap out equipment. Have also reduced pump system electric use by more than 70%. Perfect for my off-grid hydronic customers. It's more expensive, but it's my main circulating pump from now on.

Best on the Market

Comments about Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump:

The company and the product are both as advertised. The pump came at the best price I found on the internet and with no delays or backorders. It was so easy to install, I did it myself. My only question has to do with the instructions pertaining to the settings on the pump. The booklet and the online instructions are a little unclear as to the setting to use to pump the hot water to the shower in the back of the house.

Easy to install, easy to operate

By The Super

Comments about Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump:

I am a super at a luxury coop on the upper east side of manhattan. One apartment on the ph floor was not getting sufficient cooling due to poor chill water circulation through the convector unit in the apartment. I've installed pumps before but they effected the apartments below (no control over pump speed etc.) so they were removed. This pump allows me to dial the circulation in (it has 6 settings) so as not to affect other units in the building. The plumber installed it in a few hours, and it plugs directly into a 110 volt wall outlet.

  • Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump

    Q:

I have bought this pump for a two-zone radiant system. I will buy zone valves and control switches for those but I am not sure whether I need a switch relay for this pump. Will it start and stop automatically when it senses a zone valve opens, or does it need to be controlled by a switch relay?

    Thanks
Asked on 12/13/2011 by Henrik from United States

    • A:

The thermostats operate the zone valves & the valve's end switch turns on the boiler. The Alpha doesn't need a connection to a relay, only power, it runs all the time, sensing pressure changes in the system and ramping up or down as needed(Auto Adapt). If you have a condensing boiler that requires a boiler loop and a heating loop (two pumps), do not use the alpha on the boiler loop, heating loop only.

      A:

If you are zoning by zone valve, you do not need a switching relay. The zone valves, zone thermostats, and this pump will all wire into the zone valve control.

    Q:

I would like to have a recirculating pump on my hot water heater for immediate hot water. What other parts would I need if I purchased this model?

Does there need to be a part installed under a sink the furthest from the hot water heater? Anything else we need to know?

A BIG BIG NO! You must use a bronze or stainless steel pump for an open system and you don't need a variable speed pump. This has to be done right or you will get hot water out of the cold water tap in the kitchen sink. A Grundfos UP 15-18B5 would be a better choice or even a smaller pump, maybe. You can purchase a recirculation kit that has all the part needed and instructions.

      A:

This pump would be way overkill for this purpose. In fact you usually don't even need a pump. I ran a 3/8" line from the end of my hot water supply line to the bottom of the hot water tank and natural heat convection keeps the water in the line hot all the time. If you did chose to add a pump, one a quarter of the size of the Alpha would be more than adequate.

  • Grundfos ALPHA 15-55 F/LC Cast Iron Circulator Pump

    Q:

I currently have a 22 year old hydronic heating system that is using a B&G Series 100 pump. (1) Will an Alpha be suitable as a replacement? I am going to be adding another zone for DHW so the pump will now be operational 12 months a year. (2) Most plumbing diagrams show the pump on the supply end of the circuit, mine is currently mounted to a flage off the boiler on the return side..any issues with this configuration? There is plently of room for mounting in the right configuration. I also intend to leave the rest of the system set up as is...the t-stats operate the zone valves, end switches (wired parallel) turn on the boiler which energizes the pump. (3) This means that with each cycle the Alpha will de-energize till the next cycle...any issues with this set up? (4) The current piping is 1-1/4", is this just a matter of getting the right sized flange to make the connections?
    Thanks for the valuable help.

JUST MAKE SURE THAT THE EXPANSION TANK CONNECTION TO THE SYSTEM IS ABOUT 12 PIPE DIAMETERS OF STRAIGHT PIPE BEFORE THE PUMP INTAKE FLANGE. Supply or Return location ok. Just plug the Alpha into an outlet and not into the Aquastat relay that turned the old B&G on and off. The Alpha runs all the time. It pays for itself in electricity savings, too.

You can use this pump to replace the Series 100 pump. You can install the pump on the return side.

      A:

The size flange needed depends on the specific application. For example, if you were connecting your flange to a 3/4" pipe, a 3/4" iron pump flange would be needed.
