Product purchased to replace an identical unit used to recirculate hot water in a closed loop system. Original unit quit working after only 2 1/2 years. Works well but not for long.

Comments about UP10-16BN5/LC, 1/2" Female NPT, 115V Pump:

Installed the UP10 for instant hot water. Heck it also keeps my pipes from freezing in the winter with being wrapped with all the pipes. I love this equipment. Think and find a multitude of purposes!

    Q:

I bought a 7-yr-old house with this device installed. It made noise from day one. Since I had never seen this device before, I assumed it was normal. In time it appears that the device made less noise and stopped working. No more instant hot water. Is this something the homeowner can repair/replace or MUST a plumber be hired? If the motor is shot, can I simply screw a new motor onto the pump head or would it have to be replaced also? In that case I'd need a plumber to sweat the joints.

Sometimes calcium deposits can build up in the re-circulator pump causing the valve to stall. If you unscrew the large diameter brass ring, the pump will come off and you can clean any deposits using household vinegar. You may have to spray it on and let it sit for a while if there are heavy deposits. I then used a dentist pick and toothbrush to clean off the deposits. This technique worked for a while when my pump first stopped working(approx. 5 years old). Eventually though, the pump will die(mine lasted about nine years) at which point you'll have to purchase a replacement re-circulator. However, you shouldn't have to sweat the pipes. I had a recirculator pump with a timer built in, when it went out, I purchased the pump without the timer (for lower cost mainly) and simply unscrewed the old pump from the existing line and replaced with the new one. You can do it yourself, just be sure to clean out any calcium deposits while the pump is off. The only thing you'll need that you may not have already is a spanner wrench for the large diameter brass fitting. Any of the big box stores will carry one of these. Also, if it makes noise, it probably has air in the line. Just turn the power off and back on around ten times and that should stop the noise. You shouldn't be able to hear it unless you put your ear right up to it. I hope this helps.

I had the same problem in my new home. The pump only lasted about 4 years. The part that fails is the impeller (small ball shaped part). We have extremely hard water in our area and the deposits built up in the pump head and on the impeller causing it to freeze up. I called several places and none of them were able to obtain that item as a replacment part. I opted to have the entire pump assemly replaced. They offer 2 models one that has sweat connections and one that has threaded connections. I had the plumber install the threaded version so in the future I can replace the pump myself.

Grundfos does not offer a replacement motor for this pump. You might be able to replace the pump yourself depending on your plumbing and mechanical abilities, but you should contact a plumber is you're unsure.

The email doesn't specify which "device" you are referring to but I will
assume it is a recirculating pump. Personally, I would not replace just the
motor as you don't really know where the problem is. My experience is that a
noise was coming from the pump rather than the motor. A homeowner can
replace this unit even though it currently has sweat fittings. Go to Home
Depot with pump in hand and tell the clerk you want Shark Bite fittings.
These fittings simply slip on the existing copper pipe and there will be no
soldering needed. You will need to cut the existing copper pipe (tubing
cutter or hack saw) and can probably do the entire replacement in 15
      minutes.
I bought my last pump off the internet as it was cheaper than at a local
plumber. Be sure to specify the exact same pump model number to ensure you
get the same pipe size & fittings as you now have.

      A:

Yes, it's relatively easy to change out the active parts (pump & timer if
timer is built in) by spinning the brass ring near the pipe fittings. Take
the usual precautions of unplugging or turning off electrical circuits,
turning off main water feed, draining water from pipes, etc. Also note
there is one moving piece, an impeller, which can fall out when the pump is
separated from the base. If your unit has a timer, the noise may have come
from the electromechanical timer. If the timer is defective, that may also
cause the pump to stop working. Since the pump is so simple, it's very
reliable. If that's where the noise was coming from, take care to look for
evidence of foreign matter in the pump housing. Since the pump's
orientation has a position that isn't recommended, check to see if the
original installation was done correctly. If wrong, you would then need to
get a plumber to properly reposition the assembly, or you may experience a
      repeat failure.
