I mark the date on the filter with a permanent marker and change out the filter every 6 or 7 months. I Also check and clean the TrueSteam tank bottom screen at the same time, even with running soft water and the the In-filter I still have mineral to remove from the TrueSteam tank as well as removing mineral from the TrueSteam heating element. Shut water off to the TrueSteam push the drain button and wait about 20mins for the unit to cool off. Have a towel ready to catch any water draining from the hoses on either side of the filter, push in on the collar around the hose fitting and at the same time pull the 1/4" hose out of the filter, do the same on the down stream side of filter, make sure you install the new filter with the flow arrow following the flow of water to the TrueSteam. Shove the hose into the fittings and gently pull back to insure the hose is locked in. Then proceed to cleaning out TrueSteam tank. I usually remove the tank and screen and clean it in the utility sink with CLR mineral deposit cleaner, NOT SURE if you should use the CLR on heating coil so I don't, I wait for the Mineral to dry and break off the mineral from around the heating coil.

Great filter.
I used as pre filter to Honeywell's RO Water Filter with Storage Tank (SKU: 50045947-001) while installing a Honeywell whole house humidifier, due to the fact we have hard water.
Everything worked out great.

Second review on this product since I bought in bulk and individually (to get to free shipping level). See previous post for the "good", the only "bad" I'll mention is that one has no idea if this filter is used up or not - there is no visible means to see if it really needs to be replaced or not so you just have to take the OEM's word for it...yes, they who make money from selling more of these. Also, even at the great pricing I got from buying in bulk, they seem kind of spendy for what they are. Otherwise, it is what it is.

I installed one of these filters on a new true steam humidifier. Install was simple but I will have to see how well it works after the winter season.

So far works as advertised.

Comments about TrueSTEAM In-Line Water Filter For Scale And Sediment:

Installed in about 3 hours, because I'm a perfectionist. Probably could do again in half that time.
Works well. No odors or other undesireable effects.
I initially set my VisionPro IAQ thermostat to run the fan whenever it called for humidity but I didn't like the fan blowing cool air when the heat pump was not heating.
Changed setting to humidify only when heat is on, and it is still keeping the relative humidity up around 53-54% with the set-point at 55% so I'm happy.
Don't get the dry mouth and throat at night like I used to during heating season. We'll see how it does when it really gets cold.

Where can I buy an in-line filter?

What kind of in-filter? For the TrueSteam or Frige? If it's for the TrueSteam, you have found it.

  • TrueSTEAM In-Line Water Filter For Scale And Sediment

    Q:

This filter is leaking a light gray sandy substance into the tank of the TrueSteam Humidifier. Is that normal or do I have a defective filter?
    Asked on 1/13/2011 by Anonymous

    2 answers

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

The filter is probably fine. It is normal for minerals and sediment to gather in the tanks of these humidifiers. Just make sure to clean the tank as directed.

Answered on 1/26/2011 by PexSupply Staff from NY
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

The filter contains clear glass balls and filter paper. If the paper ripped the glass balls could enter the tank; however, the more common sandy material in the bottom of the TrueSteam tank is from desolved minerals in the water. It is why the TrueSteam tank has a screen in the bottom and should be cleaned annually as described in the installation guide that cam with the TrueSteam unit.

How much sediment ends up in a given TrueSteam depends on the water supply which vary significantly by area.

1.How often should this filter be replaced?

    2. Is the replacement just a matter of twisting-off the existing filter? There is no readily apparent method from just the photos provided here.

This filter has a service life of 6-12 months and yes, you should be able to remove the existing filter by twisting it off.
