I installed this unit in a loft with a gas furnace located in a closet with only a side filter for the return, so a steam unit was the best option. The top of the furnace has no square box so I had to use the remote kit with some modifications. I was able to mount it with great access, and the recommended slope for the drain and steam outlets. Luckily the washer and dryer hookups were close by for fresh water supply and drain.
I had to use a 90deg angle coming out of the unit to prevent the steam pipe from bending.
I am not a professional installer so it took me much longer than 45 minutes and a few trips to the Hardware Store but the instructions are clear enough. I was able to mount the humidistat next to the current thermostat by using two unused wires in the original wire bundle.
I recommend professional installation, this took me a whole day but the final result is working great. 20%RH higher moisture level makes a big difference in the comfort at home.
If I would do it again, i would pick a more powerful unit so it reaches set point faster.
Great product. Simple maintenance. Perfect for retrofit for an existing compact system.

This product had overflow and leak issues after 6 months of operation. The unit limed up and started to leak water onto the utility room floor.
After a call to the Honeywell help line I was directed to clean the unit with CLR and install a reverse osmosis water filter because the water was too hard.
I cleaned the unit, however I didn't put in a reverse osmosis water filter, because it was cost prohibitive.
During the second season of operation, the unit started leaking again. It was limed up again, however it developed a leak in the lower water tank. It looks like the plastic is being broken down by the heat of the water.
It is not the quality that I expected from Honeywell. I feel that there is a problem with the design.

Nice Unit for the money!

Comments about Honeywell TrueSTEAM 9-gallon humidifier with H8908 manual humidistat:

Bought this unit to replace old brush type humidifier. Easy to install, follow directions and you will have no trouble. Unit working great I had installed for over a week. This unit will run when ever a call for humidity is needed automatically cycles the fan once steam is being produced. JUst wire the R & c to the unit. Wire the Humidistast to the unit and break the green thermostast wire from the HVAC unit from the Thermostast and that is all the wiring needed. Make sure you have an outlet near by that can hadle the unit purchased. This includes everything needed drain line tap water line kit. Filters are not included, make sure you purchase the right one. One other thing make sure you have enough height to mount this unit on the ductwork, if not purchase the remote hose kit as I did.

Finally, a humifier that WORKS!

Comments about Honeywell TrueSTEAM 6-gallon humidifier w/ H8908 manual humidistat:

I've had humidity problems since I bought my house (8 years ago). It's a big, modern house that the bypass humidifier, etc could never seem to improve. The change in the air was palpable after only a couple hours (!) and it really, really works. I'd give it five stars except for a couple things:
a) There are plenty of docs included, and there's a video, but the instructions overall are still REALLY poor. Seriously, Honeywell? I could have a summer intern write up better docs.
b) Everything says "should take 45 mins or less to install" - which is total BS. My old man and I (seasoned engineers and hands-on guys) took all day to get this in - mounting, new circuit, etc.. It's not an hour job, trust us.

Would recommend product, though - it's GREAT in terms of performance!

Good Product

Comments about Honeywell TrueSTEAM 9-gallon humidifier with H8908 manual humidistat:

I installed this humidifier using a remote setup. The installation was straightforward, but was not a five minute job. The unit works well but seems to accumulate a great deal of scale in the tank, even though I installed the correct filter for the water hardness. The unit also seems to cycle quite a bit. When you consider a remote mount situation, I would give the edge to the Aprilaire 800 as it is much more robust unit (puts out between 12 and 23 gpd/day depending on voltage supplied and dispersion tube length) and it comes with everything you need for a six foot remote mount install. True the Aprilaire is more expensive so that may be a motivating factor where the budget is tight. The humidifier does perform as advertised.

Comments about Honeywell TrueSTEAM 6-gallon humidifier w/ H8908 manual humidistat:

Good product, well designed and easy to install. Great way to humidify your home without dealing with the foam pad and accumulation of minerals that accompany other types of humidifiers. Be careful to examine what comes with the model you order - filters and remote installation kits are not included even though it seems that they do from the product description.

Awesome if you do it right

By Sam

Comments about Honeywell TrueSTEAM 6-gallon humidifier w/ H8908 manual humidistat:

Here's the deal. This product is basically a bucket with a huge electrode in the middle of it. The system fills the bucket with water and turns on the electrode. This creates steam which is pumped into the air ducts. Other humidifiers work by passing air over a water soaked filter. The idea of not having to deal with a nasty filter but rather having steam injected into the air flow is amazing. Because this unit basically boils the water, it leaves behind all of the calcium and lime in the tank. It does try to flush the tank every so often to get rid of it but as we all know, hard water builds up on everything. Unless you have VERY soft water the system will eventually need a cleaning. When you follow the instructions you have do due a hard water test and then buy a filter product. The product comes with a hard water test kit that you use to tell how hard your water is. There are 3 levels and at each level Honeywell recommends a product to reduce the water hardness. I am telling you, you need a method to get rid of the calcium or lime in your water or this product will not work. As with everything, people try to do it as cheaply as possible and not buy a filter. Then the system doesn't work, even though Honeywell told you want you need and people complain that this is junk. Sure it sucks to have to buy another item but you'll need one for other products as well, unless you like chipping away the build up every so often. The part number you need is Honeywell 50045947-001. If you have really bad water pressure get 50045947-002 which comes with a pump. 50045947-001 runs about $178.

With that said, Honeywell advertises this as being able to be installed in 5 minutes. That is only true if you have: 1. a drain nearby, a dedicated 15 AMP circuit (this product draws 12 amps), and a water source. You also need spot on your HVAC outflow duct large enough to mount this on. I didn't have a dedicated 15 AMP line in so I put one in - easy enough but if you aren't good with electrical you'll have to hire someone to put a line in. This comes with a saddle value which allows you to tap onto an existing water pipe without having to call a plumber. It worked great. You can use this with any humidistat or thermostat that has a humidity control. I have the Honeywell Prestige thermostat and wanted to connect this to the system wirelessly. To do that I had to buy an additional Honeywell wireless adapter. The wireless adapter made it easy to wire up. Connect A to A, B to B, C to C, D to D and you're done.

The humidifier has a service light that blinks to tell you what's wrong. If you have the prestige thermostat the thermostat will tell you what is wrong. These two products work awesome together.

All in all my complete install was about $800-$900 (including reverse osmosis filter). Is that a lot of money? I guess, but I like the best. The reverse osmosis filter took 5 minutes to install. Would have been shorter but I had to mount it to concrete.

So if you want to be successful make sure you buy the Honeywell reverse osmosis system or you'll be sorry. Installers, quit selling this to people without also selling the reverse osmosis system.

Make sure you have a hard water filter, and clean tank regularly. I clean mine monthly as a preventative measure. Easy to clean. NO pads to lime up or mold, just hot steam.

Comments about TrueSTEAM 6-gallon humidifier w/ H8908 manual humidistat:

As advertised. Easy to install. Took me about an hour to install, wire, plumb and set up programming on TSTAT. It was actually so easy that I doubted myself and since the only way you can tell its actually working (other than it getting hot) is by the indicator light I removed the unit from the furnace zip tied to a ladder and watched it kick on for the first time. It was pretty cool but unecessary. It work flawlessy. Don't know what effects the local water is going to have on it but I guess we will see.

It is based mainly on the size and construction of your home. You may want to try our TrueSTEAM Calculator (see link below).

    • A:

The size of the humidifier you need to purchase depends on the amount of space you have. If you are installing the humidifier into duct work as a whole house application, you should purchase an 8 gallon or lager model. A 6 gallon humidifier will treat a large room, while a 12 gallon humidifier will give better performance when treating a large area or whole house.

According to the manufacturer, you will need to use the VisionPRO IAQ and Installer Setup #374 to have the option of humidifying “only when the heat is on” or having the “call for humidity bring the fan on.” The manual humidistat will not have these options.

Thank you for responding to my question of Jan.9/11, which was: "What is the optimum mounting position of the manual humidistat ? - on the hot air plenum or on the wall in the living area (perhaps next to the thermostat)? Please provide reasons for your answer."
----Pages 15 & 16 of the manual do not give the answer. Only the WIRING is detailed there. ---I am looking for the most appropriate physical location of the Honeywell MANUAL (MECHANICAL) HUMIDISTAT, (NOT THE HUMIDIFIER). The humidifier is mounted on the wall of a storage and utility area, where the duct (plenum) is located, which contains the heating unit, the cooling unit and the fan unit, as well as the humidifier hose entry.
    Please advise.

I mounted the humidistat next to the thermostat using two unused wires in the original bundle. I like having the temperature control and humidity control side by side. I will replace them both eventually by a single programmable control so the wiring is ready.
Otherwise, the most convenient location is on the return air ductwork, just upstream of the humidifier. In this position, it will sense the average blended air returning from the home and control the humidifier on this basis. I didn't have that option on my furnace anyways.
You don't want to put it on the hot air plenum as the humidity level selected will be wrong. Hot air is always dryer than once it cools down and the humidistat might be out of calibrated range at high temperature. I hope this helps. Good luck.
