The product works fine and the design of the zone valve really requires this sort of operator in order to default to the open position. That said, it has the fundamental flaws of being prone to breaking off if bumped into, requiring care with design of hydro boards, by installing the heads parallel to the back plane of the board, and it feels "loose" when it operates, leading uninformed clients to try to correct this by tightening down the calibration nut, unintentionally forcing the valve to remain open continuously. This is easily correctable by client education, so I don't hesitate to use this valve.

The cheap plastic case isn't strong enough for the actuator of the 3/4" valve. The case breaks leaving the valve open all the time. I've replaced it every couple of years. It would be more often, but I've reinforced the case with loops of wire that hold for a while but the case eventually breaks at the neck anyway. The only reason I still use the part is the expense of cutting out the valve body is so high.

I have three of these acctuators in my system. I have replaced each at least three times. The early ones lasted about a year before falling appart. The more recent seem to hold together, but the end switch fails after a year or so. I will try to find an alternative.

My home heating system uses four of these operators. They are very easy to install, which is a good attribute, since about one a year fails. So for ease of installation I give it 5 stars, but for durability a two star.[...]Now I keep two spares on hand all the time, and it cost me only $55 - $60 and 5 minutes of my time when one fails.

On my old zone valve (Sparco) the outer housing (thin sheet metal) came off the base of the valve. When it tried to open the valve it just pushed the housing up instead of pushing the valve down. The replacement seems to be a little stronger, so hopefully Honeywell has corrected this problem.

In this case, the motor drive of this device opens the zone valve to allow water to flow, and the end switch closes, completing a control circuit that turns on a pump or pump and boiler to supply water and heat to a zone.
