Description for NOFP BAR460X5

The Barrier product family is a high-performance EPS foam underslab insulator and vapor retarder, designed to insulate and retard moisture migration through concrete. The core of the product is made of flexible, recycled extruded expanded polystyrene that provides the excellent insulation characteristics. This unique core has vapor retarding film laminated to both sides as well as a patented self-taping edge and overlapping flange to make the entire installation seam-free.

Like a foam cup protects your hand from the hot beverage it holds, The Barrier product family protects concrete from heat loss and moisture, especially when used in a radiant heat floor application. The Barrier under concrete insulation is a thermal block which insulates the concrete from the cold and dampness of the ground. The entire product line-up is strong, durable, and will not collapse under the weight of the concrete. Installation is far easier because you can walk on all of them without breaking - plus, the patented seam taping system makes installation fast and efficient. The Barrier underslab insulation and vapor retarder protects your flooring and other moisture sensitive furnishings in your building's interior from moisture migration while also providing dual use as an effective insulator.

High-performance insulation values, cost-saving installation, and unequaled flexibility makes The Barrier / BarrierXT & BarrierX5 the most effective underslab insulators and vapor retarders in today's market!

Features:

  • Durable / Flexible / Walkable
  • 100% Waterproof and Vapor-proof

Great product and easy to install

Comments about NOFP BarrierX5 Underslab Insulation - 1.25? x 4? x 60? Roll:

Fast and easy to install. Does double duty by being an insulator and vapor barrier so saves time installing. Seems to be very flexable so you don't have to be perfectly fine graded. It conforms to slight differences in grade very well as opposed to rigid foam board that breakes if subgrade isn't perfect. A little more expenseive than foam board but worth it for ease of installing.

This is a wonderful product. I used in a new garage i am building with a radiant heat system. It a very easy to install mat. Comes with a flap with a tape joint so the sections can be secured to each other. The factury cut edges could have been cut straighter, I had to recut all to get a perfect fit

I used this product as a thermal barrier under metal mesh to which I twist tied pex-al-pex for radiant hydronic heating and then poured the pigment-tinted cement slab that forms my warm bathroom floor.

Can this product be used under the floor of a shop or warehouse? Will it effect the load-bearing properties of the slab?

                  A:

I used this product in a residential application. I can warn you to insulate the entire slab; not just underneath, but on the sides as well. The product performs as promised but there is some temperature bleed into and out of the foundation concrete at the edges, which unfortunately was not isolated ( with product) from the slab before the pour.
An engineer can confirm that load-bearing would not be a factor. The product is perfect for thermal retention/isolation.

I believe it would be fine and not weaken the slab, but the question would
be best posed to the manufacturer.

Why does the product R-value vary from 5 to 10.5?

                  A:

The R-value depends upon the manner in which the insulation is installed. If the sheets overlap and are taped together at the seams, R-Value will be higher. When there are gaps between sheets, R-Value decreases.

The material alone has an r value for the 1.25 inch thickness of 5 at 70 F. If you includl the rvalues of a made up assembly including the gravel sand and concrete, the manufacturer suggests that 10.3 is possible-- see brochure on documents tab.

Foamboard is used for this application, not staples.

Yes, the X5 will accept foam staples as both the film and the foam will hold the staples and tubing in place.
