Comments about Nomaco K-Flex 6' Thermacel Insulation for 1" Pipe (1-1/8" Hole Size x 1/2" Thick):

I initially used the product when installing an outdoor wood stove. I loved it so much then that I bought another couple boxes to insulate the bare pipes in my basement.

Too bad it has been discontinued. The price couldn't be beaten.

                            Q:

What is the upper temperature limit this insulation should be used with? Is there any concern with using it with pipes that are directly exiting a boiler? The boiler high limit is 200* with differential it's possible water may be 210* and pipes slightly warmer--put more simply, is there a rule of thumb that this insulation should only be used starting x-# of feet from the boiler?

This insulation can handle temperatures up to 210°F. It can be placed on the piping next to hot water (i.e. not steam) boilers.

According to the manufacturer, this insulation is made from UV resistant polyolefin resins. For severe UV exposure (rooftop applications), or where optimum performance is required, a protective coating (high quality exterior acrylic latex paint) should be applied. PVC jacketing can also be used.

In order to maintain a set temperature on a tempered water line for an exterior emergency eyewash/shower unit, will this product require any supplemental heat-traced wiring, or will the insulation alone be sufficient to maintain the desired tempered water, especially during the winter season? Thank you.

This insulation will help slow down the heat loss of the piping. If you want to keep the piping at a constant temperature when water is not flowing through it, we would recommend using heat-trace wiring.

                            Q:

I am considering using Thermacel insulation for 3/4" hot water pipes (maximum water temperature less than 160 degrees). Is the insulation (SKU 78C) split so that it can be installed on existing piping? If so is it self sealing with some type of adhesive or are mechanical retainers necessary? Is this the best insulation material for a typical residential hot water system?

Yes, this Thermacel Insulation is split so that it can be installed on existing piping. You can either glue or zip tie the insulation to the piping. It does not have any self-sealing adhesive. This would be the best type of material we carry to insulate copper or PEX pipe.
