A check valve ensures that water only flows in a single direction of a plumbing system. This prevents contaminated water from flowing back into the system once it has been used. The most common type of check valve used in vertical piping applications is a spring loaded check valve. A spring loaded check is a type of valve that contains a panel that opens and closes as liquid flows through it. As pressure builds, the spring applies force and the panel is lifted. This allows the liquid to flow through and exit the system. The spring loaded check valve serves as a one way street and liquid cannot flow through in the opposing direction. These unique check valves are best for potable water pumps.
The average home plumbing system operates between 35 to 55 psi, depending on the pressure regulator's setting. If the street pressure falls below the house pressure, water will flow back into the city system. A check valve prevents this from happening. Check valves are also commonly used in closed loop solar applications to prevent thermal siphoning. Spring loaded check valves may be installed horizontally or vertically in a plumbing system.
1/2" and 3/4" spring loaded check valves are the most common sizes sold at PexSupply, however sizes are available from 1/2" to 2". Hydrovalve and Matco-Norca spring loaded checks are available in a Female Threaded (IPS) connection.
