Simple to Install

Comments about Taco 2 Zone Switching Relay:

I found this to be pretty simple to install as I have experience in household wiring. The directions do no show the external connections to any degree and assume that you know that type of information. If you do not, you may be better off having the unit installed by an electrician or plumbing expert.

The switching relay is almost fool-proof and should last for many years. I have one that was installed for 11 years and still running fine.

Excellent Choice for Switching Circs

By swartz1234

from Auburn, PA

Comments about 1 Zone Switching Relay:

I used this relay to control two large circlulators on/off based on the thermostat signal from my zone controller. My system is more complicated than most with an outdoor wood furnace supplying my primary heat through a heat exchanger into the closed oil boiler loop with oil boiler backup. When the heating zones call for heat, this relay switches on the outdoor loop and the boiler loop. The heating zones feed off the boiler loop with their own circs. This was simple to install and works flawlessly. I highly recommend it for any situation where simple circulator switching is needed.

Wonderful, Simple Controller

Comments about 3 Zone Switching Relay:

I replaced three old relays, all into one compact unit. The incentive was to have an installation that would run the boiler only when one of the zones is calling for heat. It was so easy to install; the hookups were absolutely clear. Works perfectly.
The price from PexSupply was the lowest I could find. Some suppliers charged more than an hundred dollars more.

I had a single zone controller and added another zone so I purchased this three zone controller. Excellent product and easy to figure out on the installation. I should have bought this is the first place. Again, this is a solid product.

This is an electronic control so it technically can be installed in any
direction (except that the back must be against the wall). That said,
it is slightly better to install it in the intended direction so that
lights are visible and labels are readable.

  • 3 Zone Switching Relay

    Q:

I am setting up a 3 zone system (a pump for each zone). It is a closed loop system, so there is a heat exchanger with a separate pump on the domestic side that will provide heat for the radiant side. I will need this 'fourth' pump to loop hot water through the hear exchanger whenever heat is needed. How do I get that 4th pump to come on whenever any of the three zones call for heat? Thanks

      A:

there are many ways you could do this and it will really depend on your
design. You can have a temperature sensor, you could have a flow sensor or
you could have your heater control that last pump. I do not have this
design in my house but I would first try to define what you want the
heat exchange loop to monitor. I tend to stay away from heat exchanges as
they are inefficient and there is probably simpler way to design.

If you are using a taco or smiler relay us the "TT" thermals and hook up a
24 volt coil relay to fire the heat exchanger pump. I like the MacDuffco
MDR2400 (SPDT) relay in this application.

Do you have a relay for the 4th pump? You will need it for the radiant side. You can have this setup to turn on when the other switch on the main heat unit.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

There is a relay contact that is enegized whenever any of the zones are activated. This set of relay contacts can be used to power the pump that puts hot water into the heat exchanger.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

When any of the zones calls for heat, the "solated end switch (X1 and X2) will start the boiler" - that is, the wires from X1 and X2 go to the "TT" on the Aquastat controller to turn on the boiler. You may be able to run wires in parallel from X1 and X2 to your 4th pump so it also goes on when any of the zones go on. (Caveat - I am a DIYer!)

I'm not 100% sure what you are doing, but it sounds like you are using a domestic hot water heater to heat an in-floor (radiant) system. If you are using the pump controller shown in the picture below, there should be an output to turn the boiler on. Just wire your 4th pump up like it were the boiler.

Have you looked at the Taco Zone Control Modules (e.g. ZVC403-2)? These normally are used to control zone valves, but can also be wired to drive a switching relay. The modules contain their own relays to control the 'boiler' pump, which is the 4th pump in your scenario.

      A:

Use an SR 501. Take the TT out from the SR503 to the thermostat input on
the SR 501. The output from the SR 501 can power the fourth pump and
      turn on a boiler.

      A:

TT (X X) on the SR-503 control will close a dry contact to run (trigger) an additional relay for the "boiler" circ pump. I recommend using a Taco 501 relay to keep the installation simple.

      A:

it sounds like you need a three-zone zone valve control rather than a three-zone switching relay. Switching relays are meant for applications that use a separate circulator pump for each zone and do not incorporate zone valves. Installations like yours (that use a single circulator for the entire system along with an individual zone valve for each zone) call for a zone valve control. The Taco part that we'd recommend is model ZVC403-2.

I want to control one extra zone pump(for my garage) which is in another location than the rest of the system. Do I need this switch and a thermostat (which one?) or is there a simpler and more economical way? Thank you

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

It would probably be easiest to use this control along with a low-voltage thermostat. It's also possible to wire a line-voltage thermostat in the electrical line to the circulator, but this is more complicated and would probably require the assistance of an electrician.

  • 6 Zone Switching Relay

    Q:

can i operate a circulator pump like a zone valve using a control box ? or do i need relays for each to power the cir. pumps when the therm calls for heat?

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

A switching relay works with circulator pumps as a zone valve control module works with zone valves. The SR506 can control up to 6 pumps if you are zoning by circulator.

All three zones are getting the signal from their thermostats. Their pumps should be running/the heat should be on.

Hi. I have a zvc 406 with priority installed in my boiler. It powers 4 zones, being the inderect water heater the priority zone. Priority switch is turned off. There are two extra zones. Id like to hook up the infloor zone to one of the zvc 406 extra zones and have the sr501 power the circulator on for the infloor. Do i just tie in the extra end switch from the zvc 406 to the switching relay? if so, where is it? i dont see an end switch on it, only on the sr501 exp. Thanks
