Comments about Taco 4 Zone Valve Control Module with Priority:

Broke the house up into a Primary/Secondary Loop
Controlling 3 zone valves with end switches signaling panel when valve is open (I like this feature).
When active, operates secondary loop pump and commands a wall hung boiler on.
Have plans this summer to install same panel in
parents house, maybe with more zones.
No Complaints here on products operation

Comments about Taco 4 Zone Valve Control Module with Priority:

This unit does exactly what it says it will do. My heating system is three zones, plus an in-floor radiant system. The control wiring for this systems was a maze of cable, relays, and guesswork. Seriously needed replacing.

The Good:
Simple, clean wiring.
Zone indicator lights let you tell at a glance what zone is calling for heat
Includes transformer and relays so that you can bypass your internal boiler controls (if desired)
Simple screw down connections for control and power wiring.
Tech support was very helpful and replied quickly.

The Bad:
The manual could be a bit more clear. Need to review the manual while looking at the circuit board to get the full picture. I actually contacted Taco tech support, then found the information I was looking for printed on the circuit board.
Access holes do not prevent dust from entering unit.

The Ugly:
Working clearances internal to the unit are very tight. Need to be careful about wire routing to ensure a clean install. Ensure and test that power is off before working on unit, even connection of low voltage. 24 volts can kick up quite a few sparks.

What do I use the Priority feature for? Can you give me some examples?

The priority feature is almost always used for an indirect water heater.

      A:

When a priority zone "calls", all other zones' "calls" will be disregarded until the priority zone is satisfied.  The priority zone is most often used for DHW (Domestic Hot Water) demands....the thinking being that the spacating will not suffer from a relatively short "off" period while the water heater is allowed to heat up.

The priority feature is typically used for an indirect water heater. This
way all the other zones turn off while the water is being heated to heat
      faster.

      A:

You would use the priority feature for a Domestic Hot water call. It would
send the water exclusively to that zone, then when the demand is met, or a
time limit is exceeded, it would fire the other zones.

Normally, no more than three. The key factor is that you do not exceed the maximum allowable amp draw.

    • A:

I recently completed an installation with 16 zones, in my home that I am building. I found that the 24V zone actuators that I am using pulled enough amperage that I was only able to run a single actuator on each zone (otherwise the TACO unit clicks on and then almost immediately clicks off). In some of my larger rooms, I have 3 separate loops with 3 separate zone actuators, so I ended up having to get several TACO zone valve control modules to give me the 16 zones I needed to drive the 16 actuators I have. For rooms with multiple loops I then jumpered the thermostat connections at the top of the circuit board, so only one thermostat would trigger the separate actuators (note: you can only jumper three thermostat sets, otherwise this will overload the transformer and it won't work).
