    Q:

    what type of self leveling compound do you recommend? what thickness of slc is necessary. I would be laying this over an existing wood t&g floor that is covered with vinyl flooring. Tile or engineered flooring would go over the grid.

      A:

      I personally would speak to a reputable ready-mix company regarding self levelling compounds/ready mixes. tell them what your plans are and they will tell you what they can do, do not just talk to one talk to a few. talk too professional concrete finishing company's as well and you will get a good feel for what is possible. Phone calls are a cheep source to a wealth of info. Doing over lays can be tricky the flatter the surface you start with the less hassle you will have finishing, high spots mean thicker over lays and more money. If your floor is relatively flat (I.E. no more than 1/2" highest to lowest) with very little deflection, than 1 1/2" to 2" overlay is more than enough. deflection in the floor is a killer it will crack your over lay and cause shear points on the heating tubing. not to mention cracking your finished tile work or popping seams on the engineered floor. New construction starts with 1" T&G flooring than snap panel than heating tubing covered with 1 1/2" of concrete. If you do not have the base and rigidity I WOULD NOT DO THE OVERLAY (I would seek alternate heating methods.) If you do have the base the snap panels are perfect for this type of work as they are thin yet sturdy enough to hold your tubing in place, walking on the panels not an issue walk flat footed all is good.       Viega requires that 3/4" of material is over the top of the tubing. Ensuring the strength of the floor would be up to the flooring contractor.

      The manufacturer does not have an R Value on this product. They recommend a minimum of R-5 insulation under the snap panel.

    I am pouring a 4" basement floor. Can this be walked upon during the pour? And can rebar or mesh be laid on top of it in the pour?

    I am pouring a 4" slab in a garage. First can this system be used under a slab that will have cars parked on it? Second, everything I have read says to place the pex tubing 2" below the top of the slab, does this system raise the tubing up so it falls where it needs to in the pour? Thanks

      Yes to both: you can use this system under parked cars and it will raise the tubing to its proper position.

      You can not place plywood directly on the snap panels. You can put a layer of concrete over the panels and then place the plywood if desired.

      The reflective foil is not something that is required for installation, but is beneficial for the system.

      Conduction always trumps radiation. Foil is only useful when you have an air gap separating it from the heat source (pex tubing). It blocks/reflects the radiant heat from passing though it. If the foil is right against the tubing then the heat will conduct straight through it. Think of how well an aluminum can insulates your hand from the cold drink inside.

    Do you recommend a minimum depth imed of concrete or mud product if installing of an existing concrete floor? and do you recommend a specific product to pour for this case?

      You will need at least 3/4" of concrete over the snap panel. The type of concrete or mud is based on preference, it does not make a difference which type is used.

      This is made to be buried under concrete. If you place this under laminate flooring you will be able to feel the uneven surface under your feet.
