A smart alternative to copper pipe

By The Fix-It Guy

Comments about 3/8" White ViegaPEX (100 ft. coil):

I purchased 3/8" ViegaPEX so that I could provide domestic water service to my oil burner inflow valve. I found this product more convenient than copper pipe because I was able to run one continuous 45-foot length behind a baseboard without removing the baseboard, something I couldn't have done with copper pipe. The PEX tubing was also much less expensive than copper. I also used Sharkbite push-on fittings to make connections to an existing valve on the source end and 1/2" copper pipe on the outflow end of the PEX run. The Sharkbite fittngs worked flawlessly on both the PEX and copper pipe connections. I only wish the more flexible AquaPEX was also available in shorter lengths than 1000 foot coils.

Just used it for irrigation...great stuf

Comments about 3/4" Blue ViegaPEX (1000 ft. coil):

Just laid 10,000 feet of this for ranch water supply lines- Used a 6" trencher for lines. The 1000 foot lengths were a little cumbersome to work with, until we finally worked out a system for un-coiling it. I would recommend a spool-type system to un-coil it straight because it will twist up if you just try to pull it off the side of the coil. Used sharkbite fittings and they worked great.

Can this product be used for hot water max 180 degrees and chilled water 2 pipe systems
Asked on 4/24/2012 by piper from RICHMOND VIRGINIA

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

ViegaPEX is rated up to 100psi at 180°F. It can also be used with chilled water and is compatible with propylene glycol antifreeze.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

ViegaPEX tubing is intended and recommended for use in hot and cold
      potable water distribution systems. Design
temperature and pressure ratings for ViegaPEX is 160 psi @ 73°F and 100
psi @ 180°F. ViegaPEX tubing can also
be used in "continuously-recirculating" plumbing systems at temperatures
of up to 140°F while still maintaining
excellent chlorine resistance. For information on the suitability for
other hot and cold water applications not listed
here, consult with your Viega representative.

Is there anything required to use this pipe in an exposed area outside? Will painting it protect it from sunlight?

      A:

I doubt this stuff will take paint and its not suitable for any kind of sun exposure. I'd try to protect any outside supply line from accidental damage and exposure. Can you run it in a conduit? Have you considered using galvanized pipe for your outside supply?

Answered on 4/19/2012 by Another PexSupply Customer
    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

PEX is not UV-resistant and must not be exposed to sunlight. We recommend sleeving exposed PEX with PVC rather than painting it.

      A:

only way to use this pipe outside is to box it in, out of the sunlight. the uv will ruin it quickly, maybe even within a year

You may need insulation from the cold weather if exposed.  Depends on the climate where you live.

Answered on 4/18/2012 by Another PexSupply Customer
    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

There is a plastic sleeve that is used to insulate copper pipe when it is
underground, also you can use pipe foam insulation. If it is underground,
      nothing is needed.
As for painting, I don't think you can completely conceal the pipe and I'm
not sure what the paint chemicals would do to the pex.

Can ViegaPex fittings be used on zurn pex pipe?

      A:

Not sure of an "official" answer on this or what an engineer would say, but I've used several different manufacturers' fittings on several different brands of tubing with no problems at all. Someone with some data would know better, but it's more or less like copper: interchangeable for regular applications. Any negligible differences in diameter or wall thickness between brands are irrelevant because of the clamps/rings that yank the tubing down on the fittings.

I'm pretty sure you can, as long as the pipe diameter matches that of the
fittings. I have used some Zurn fittings with the ViegaPex pipe, so they
      should work both ways.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

If the Zurn pipe is the same type, then yes i.e. A, B or C.
PEX-A tubing is produced using Peroxide (or, “Engel”) method, named after
the inventor Tomas Engel. During the manufacturing process, free radicals
are created when HDPE polymer is melted and cross-links between molecules
occur at temperatures that exceed the decomposition temperature of the
polymer. Some of the manufacturers who make this type of PEX are: Uponor
(former Wirsbo), Rehau and Mr. PEX.
PEX-B is made using a "Silane" or "Moisture Cure" method of cross-linking,
where links between the molecules of the HDPE form after the extrusion
process using a catalyst and exposing PEX tubing to water. This type of PEX
is the most common and is manufactured by a large number of companies, such
as: Viega, Watts, Bow, Everhot, Zurn and many others.
PEX-C is manufactured using “Electronic Irradiation” method of
cross-linking, also known as "Cold" cross-linking. Here, cross-linking of
the molecules is done after the process of extrusion by exposing the pipe
to an electron radiation beam. The radiation emitted allows to break the
existing links between molecules of the polymer and initiate cross-linking
process. Some of the manufacturers are: Nibco, Roth, Cash-Acme.

      A:

Yes. Pex pipe has standardized specs. Quality of pipe may vary from supplier to supplier but specs do not. So fittings will work for any pipe that has the same specs. However Pex fittings will not work for other pex standards such as pex-al-pex.
