Convert single pipe steam radiator

Comments about 1-1/4" x 1/2" Black Hexagon Bushing:

This is what you need to convert your single pipe steam radiator to hydronic/water. Remove the old fitting with a 3/4" socket, breaker bar, and a long pipe for leverage. Be careful when installing the fitting not to crack the radiator cast iron.

I did crack two radiators by turning this in too far. Remember these are TAPERED threads so the fitting gets tighter as you turn and the leverage can expand and crack the radiator. I used an old 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" bushing with a lot of J-B Weld to repair the radiator, then installed this fitting into the bushing after the JBWeld hardened. I was able to glue and seal the radiator crack via the large bushing opening. most radiators have 1 1/2" NPT openings top and bottom.

disclaimer: Not all old single pipe radiators are suitable for conversion. Ward is an American brand, perhaps the last one.

Perfect for cast iron radiators

Comments about 1-1/4" x 1/2" Black Hexagon Bushing:

I have learned the hard way that using NPT tapered pipe fittings with cast iron radiators runs a significant risk of cracking the cast iron. PexSupply sells the proper bushings to use with the wonderful Danfoss thermostatic valves. Very few professionals seem to know this and I commend PexSupply for selling the proper IPS (Iron Pipe Straight) bushings.

  • Q:

I have discoverd that bushings come in "NPT" and "threaded" options. This fitting is "threaded". I don't understand the difference and I don't know which is most appropriate for use with cast iron radiators. Will you explain the difference between bushings with "NPT" threads and "threaded" threads? I intend to use a Legend angle union/spud fitting which, if I understand correctly has a 1/2" male NPT thread on the spud.

      A:

NPT simply stands for National Pipe Thread, a standard for tapered threads in the United States.
