  • Q:

Does this backflow preventer need to be oriented in a certain position, or can I install it flowing uphill? Is there a need to provide a drain if installed indoors?

You can install it horizontal or vertical. Just make sure the flow arrow on
the body is pointing in the direction of the water flow. Atmospheric vent
should be 12" above the floor. Directions are in the box

Preferred position is horizontal with port down and piped to drain. Drain
line must slope down, minimum 1/4"/ft. and not be trapped. May be installed
in verticle position, with port piped to drain.

Ye must be installed at the supply side of the system if you are doing an open system, and you still need a drain f back flow preventer, the boiler, and the DHW if you are installing one.

No it doesn't need to be oriented in a certain position. You can install it in any position necessary but make sure you have the correct flow direction running through the device. Think of it as a one way street, you have to enter in one direction and exit the other. No drain necessary.
