A nipple is a short piece of pipe with male pipe threads at both ends. It is used to connect two female threaded pipes or fittings. The length of the nipple is specified by the overall length including the threads. A "close nipple" has no unthreaded area and is virtually unexposed when connected to two female fittings.

Brass nipples are best known for their incredible strength and excellent ductility in high temperatures. Brass nipples are commonly used in plumbing applications because they are best suited to hot-water distribution lines. However, they are not quite as ductile in colder temperatures. They have good conductivity and a low magnetic permeability.

Brass has a longer lifespan than many alternative metals, such as steel. It offers great corrosion resistance from salt water, acids, minerals, and peaty soils contained in water. Brass is a soft metal that is easy to install and creates a tight seal. It offers many of the same advantages of copper, but provides a heavier wall.
