  • What is the difference between high efficiency boilers and standard boilers?

    High efficiency boilers generally have efficiency ratings over 90%, making them Energy Star approved. These boilers are often modulating and condensing boilers. The modulation feature allows them to operate at different BTU levels depending upon the amount of heat that is required at a given time (as opposed to a traditional boiler that fires at 100% even if only a small amount of heat is required). The condensing property refers to the ability to convert the condensed liquid that is produced by the boiler into energy. By doing so the boiler wastes less energy and is therefore more energy efficient.

  • How can I tell how many BTUs the boiler I buy needs to have?

    For replacement boilers, if your previous boiler was sufficient and worked well you can simply replace the existing boiler with a new one that has the same BTU capacity. For boilers that are being installed in new residences you will need to find the BTU requirements by doing a heat loss of your given space. The heat loss will depend on insulation of walls and ceiling, window type and frequency, outdoor temperature, and several other factors. You can click the Rule of Thumb Guide to get a general idea of what you will need, but you should get a detailed heat loss report to know for sure.

  • What is the shipping process if I order a boiler from you?

    Boilers ship via freight shipping companies, such as Yellow and UPS Freight. When the order ships, we will provide you with the carrier name and tracking number. The boiler will be shipped to your curb. If you need a lift gate on the truck please call to let us know. In general, the freight company will call you to set up a delivery time. If you need a specific delivery time, you may want to call the delivery company once the order ships.

  • Do you honor the warranties on these boilers?

    PexSupply.com honors all manufacturer warranties. If there is any manufacturer defect with the boiler we will replace it upon return, or issue you a credit for the boiler.

A boiler uses natural gas, oil, or electricity to heat water or produce steam, which is circulated through a network of pipes into radiators, baseboard convectors, radiant floors or fan-forced coils. On average, 30 to 40% of household energy bills are from heating and cooling costs. The efficiency of boilers is measured by the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), a measure of overall performance. Some of the highest-rated units are natural gas-fired, with AFUE ratings as high as 99%. In comparison, many older boilers have AFUE ratings of only 55 to 65%. Therefore upgrading to a high efficiency boiler can vastly lower your heating bills.

System Types
Boilers can be hot water or steam, and either type can be gas or oil boilers. The piping systems are different for each type. The hot water system boiler uses a pump to circulate hot water while the steam boiler uses its own pressure to circulate steam throughout the system. Both use a burner to heat the water to the temperature that is set on the thermostat. An aquastat monitors the temperature of the water and turns the burner off when the temperature reaches the desired level. Steam boilers must heat the water to a higher temperature, and therefore have lower efficiencies than hot water boilers. Natural-gas-fired boilers are more efficient than oil-fired boilers.

Combination boilers combine water heating and heat generation in one unit and can save considerable money on heating and water heating costs. The heating part of the "combi" boiler works in the same fashion as other boilers.
