Tips From PEXSupply.com
  • 7/23/08 Exactly how long are your loops?

  • You don't need a tape measure to know how long your loops are. PEX Tubing is marked every 3 feet, so if you look at the markings going from and coming back to your manifold on the same loop, you can just subtract the lower marked number from the higher and know, within a few feet, the length of your loop. Make sure not to use loops longer than 300 feet in radiant heat applications to avoid heat loss. 1/2" 1000 ft hePEX Tubing
  • 7/22/08 Which pumps use Webstone flanges?

  • Webstone Isolator Flanges can be used with circulator pumps of all kinds including all Taco pumps, Grundfos pumps, and Bell & Gossett pumps. Webstone Isolation Flanges
  • 7/21/08 Water Heater Adapters

  • When hooking up PEX to your water heater, there needs to be at least 6 inches of metal to act as a barrier. A water heater adapter makes this connection quick and easy with one side connecting to your PEX tubing and the other side to the water heater. HydroPEX Water Heater Adapters
  • 7/18/08 Firomatic Oil Valves

  • The handle of Firomatic valves is made of a special alloy that melts at a very low temperature. In the event of a fire in the boiler room, the handle of the shaft melts off which frees the plunger and shuts off the oil flow to the burner. Firomatic Oil Products
  • 7/17/08 Sizing your pressure reducing valve

  • A properly sized valve prevents noisy operation and premature valve failure. A valve that is too large can lead to problems such as wire draw under low flow conditions. In general, the minimum flow through a water pressure reducing valve should be 10% to 15% of the maximum flow rate desired in the system. Pressure reducing valves should be selected based on the flow and pressure ranges listed, not by the size of the pipe they will be attached to. You should select a regulator whose operating pressures fall within the middle of its rated range. Pressure Valves
  • 7/16/08 Naming tees

  • Tees are named first by the size of the ends, and then by the size of the middle connection (typically called end-end-middle). The order of the ends does not matter; for example, a 1/2" x 3/4" x 1/2" tee would function the same as a 3/4" x 1/2" x 1/2" tee if you just flip it around. If a tee only has one size listed, all three connections are for the same size pipe. Brass Tees
  • 7/15/08 How far will heat travel from each blue heating wire?

  • Suntouch wires are woven 2.75 inches apart so that people will not feel any cold area between the blue wires at that spacing. However, if your tile extends three inches past the wire, you will probably feel a temperature drop. Your radiant heated floor temperature can also be affected by the presence of ductwork below, insulation variations, solar gain, and heat loss outside. All of these are good reasons to plan your layout so you can install the heated floor mats where they will do the most good. 240 Volt Suntouch Radiant Heat Mats

  • 7/10/08 Tools for your manifold

  • Different manifolds require different tools. If you are using a HydroPEX Crimp Copper Manifold, you have two choices for your tool- either the HydroPEX Clamping Tool or the Watts Crimping Tool. Both of these tools are used with HydrdoPEX fittings but require different rings to make the connections (stainless steel for Clamping and copper for Crimping). HydroPEX Crimp Copper Manifolds
  • 7/9/08 An uphill tank

  • If your septic tank is located uphill from your house, a sewage pump will be required to get the waste to the sewer line. Make sure that you get a pump large enough for the waste to travel the full distance and install check valves to ensure that sewage water does not re-enter the sump and building. Little Giant Sewage Pumps
  • 7/8/08 What voltage does my thermostat use?

  • Thermostats run on either line voltage or low voltage. The easiest way to tell if you need a line or low voltage thermostat is to look at the wire. If it is a very thin wire (like a doorbell or speaker wire), you will need a low voltage thermostat. If it is a heavy wire, you will need a line voltage thermostat. Honeywell TL8230A1003 Line Voltage Thermostats
  • 7/7/08 Matching your flanges

  • If you need a pump for potable (drinking) water, you must use a bronze pump. With a bronze pump, you absolutely need bronze flanges. Cast iron flanges will rust, compromising your whole system. With a cast iron pump, you can use either bronze flanges or cast iron flanges. With no clear benefit of using bronze flanges with a cast iron pump, most people opt to save some money and use cast iron flanges. Bronze Taco Flanges
  • 7/3/08 Facts about Indoor Air

  • According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the air in homes can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air.
  • The National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine reports that exposure to indoor pollutants is a key contributor to the asthma problems of this nation.
  • Most allergy and asthma sources are passed from person to person through the air.
  • The air in a single room can contain hundreds of thousands of infectious bacteria, viruses, fungal spores, and contaminants, which can only be seen with a microscope.
  • Health effects may show up immediately, or after years of exposure to poor indoor air quality. These symptoms include some respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer. They may be severely debilitating or fatal.

  • Clean your indoor air with UV light using a product that is friendly for the environment and your wallet. UV-Aire Air Purification Systems
  • 7/2/08 Thermostat placement

  • Where you put your thermostat can greatly change how effective it is. If your thermostat is directly under an air conditioner or next to a window, this cool air will make your thermostat think that the room is colder than it really is. If the thermostat is over a lamp, television or heat source, it will read warmer than the room is. Put your thermostat away from these items and you'll get accurate readings to send the right commands to your heating and cooling systems. Series 300 Robertshaw Programmable Thermostats
  • 7/1/08 Save water with an efficient toilet

  • An efficient toilet or flushometer can really save money on your water bill. Some flushometers use less than 2 gallons of water per flush while others flush almost 5 gallons! To check if your toilet is silently wasting water, place a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If the colored water makes it to the bowl without flushing, you are losing water. Sloan Flushometers- Royal 100-1.6

  • 6/27/08 How did polyethylene get its start?

  • Polyethylene was invented in the early 1930s and played an important role for the Allied Forces in World War II. British scientists took polyethylene and used it as an insulator allowing British pilots to have radar on their planes for the first time in history. Airborne radar was a great technical advantage for battles fought through clouds with low visibility and for long-distance warfare. Polyethylene has come a long way, as it is now cross-linked and used for plumbing and heating water lines all throughout Europe and North America. ThermaPEX 1/2" x 300' Tubing

  • 1/16/08 How to unclog a toilet

  • A toilet auger is a special tool that has an offset hand crank, a long sleeve handle and a special auger bit at the end to break through a clog or retrieve an obstruction like a rag. The auger bit is connected via a flexible shaft to a crank handle that you control. It's reach is about 3 feet. Here's how you use this tool.

    * Some toilet bowls drain to the front, some to the rear. Whichever way yours drains is the direction you want the curved end of the auger handle pipe to face.
    * Leave about 4" to 6" of cable between the drain hole and the end of the curved handle pipe, then tighten the set screw.
    * Push the flexible cable into the drain and crank the auger clockwise until it stops then push forward.
    * The auger may feel like it grabbed something or it may just break up the clog. If it feels like it grabbed something, pull it out to check. If it gets stuck, gently turn the crank back and forth or push and pull the tube, but never force the auger or you may break the toilet porcelain.
    * After breaking up the clog use the plunger again to make sure the obstruction is cleared.
    * Once your sure it's OK, flush the toilet and you're done!

  • 1/14/08 What to do if your ProPress system leaks

  • In general, ProPress fittings only leak for one of three reasons:

    1. The fitting was never pressed.
    2. The copper tubing was not properly inserted.
    3. The pressing jaws were not properly aligned over the fitting.

With the first situation, confirm tubing is properly installed and press. It is not necessary to drain the system to do so. In the second and third situation, the user must cut out the fitting and re-install properly.

  • 12/19/07 What is thermal expansion?

  • With modern plumbing codes mandating backflow prevention, thermal expansion can cause pressure buildup in domestic water systems. When demand is put upon a potable water system, hot water is drawn from the water heater. Cold water from the supply line enters the water heater to replenish it. The cold water is heated to replace the hot water used. With the installation of a backflow preventer, check valve or pressure reducing valve on the supply line, the water heater and the system piping from a closed plumbing system under pressure. As the water is heated, thermal expansion occurs. Pressure increases until the relief valve opens and the expanded water spills from the water heater. This spillage results in wasted energy and a potential safety hazard.

A thermal expansion tank provides control of maximum pressures at a level below the relief valve setting and accommodates the increased volume of water created by thermal expansion, returning it to the system when hot water delivery is demanded.

  • 12/13/07 Why do I need a Flow Control, can't I just use a swing check valve?

  • A Bell & Gossett Flo-Control has two jobs. First the Flo-Control valve acts as a check valve, keeping the system flow from short-circuiting into places where it doesn't belong. Second, and just as important, the Flo-Control valve stops hot water from migrating into a zone that's not calling for heat.
A swing check valve will do the first job (preventing flow from short-circuiting), but it usually can't do the second. The Flo- Control valve has a weighted check. When the water in the boiler is hot, it tries to rise into the system piping. We call this gravity circulation. The Flo-Control valve's weighted check stops gravity circulation before it can create a problem with your customer.

  • 12/12/07 Fluidmaster Flush Valve Installation Instructions

  • 1. Turn off water supply. Flush toilet and remove excess water from tank with a sponge. Remove water supply line from the bottom of the toilet fill valve.
    2. Unbolt tank from bowl, then lift off tank. Remove washers and nuts from the bottom of the tank, then remove old bolts and gasket.
    3. Remove the old flush valve, including the flapper/tank ball unit.
    4. When installed, the top of the overflow pipe on the new flush valve should be at least 1 inch below the hole in the tank where the tank flush lever is mounted. If necessary, cut the overflow pipe with a saw to achieve this height. The critical level mark on the fill valve (identified by a C.L. mark on the Fluidmaster Fill Valve) should be at least 1 inch above the top of the overflow pipe.
    5. Install new flush valve. Tighten locknut ½ turn beyond hand tight. Do not overtighten or tank may crack.
    6. Slide tank-to-bowl gasket (sold separately) onto threaded end of flush valve.
    7. Place the tank back on the bowl so that the tank-to-bowl gasket fits evenly. Level tank and bowl.
    8. Reconnect the tank to the bowl with bolts, washers and nuts. Tighten bolts evenly without overtightening.
    9. Connect the flapper chain. Allow a slight slack when the flapper is in the closed position.
    10. Attach the existing refill tube to overflow pipe.
    11. If you have a Fluidmaster Fill Valve, remove overflow pipe ring. Then use angle adapter clip to attach directly to overflow pipe.
    12. Reconnect water supply line to the bottom of the toilet fill valve.
    13. Turn on your water supply, check for leaks, then check the flush.

  • 12/5/07 Should I install insulation in my in-slab radiant heat system?

  • Heating and cooling ("space conditioning") account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. About 20% goes for heating water. On the other hand, lighting and appliances and everything else account for only 10 to 30% of the energy used in most residences. It makes good sense to turn lights and appliances off when they are not needed, and you'll save even more on your energy costs if your reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling.

Unless your home was constructed with special attention to energy efficiency, adding insulation will probably reduce your utility bills. Much of the existing housing stock in the United States is not insulated to the best level. Older homes are likely to use more energy than newer homes, leading to very high heating and air-conditioning bills. Even if you own a new home, adding insulation may save enough money in reduced utility bills to pay for itself within a few years, continue to save you money for as long as you own the home, and increase the resale value of your house. • 11/27/07 How does a heat exchanger work?

  • The Flat Plate Heat Exchangers act as a barrier between the water that you drink and the water you use for heating your home. The water for heating will remain in the tubing and its heat will be transfered over to the drinking water without the water ever mixing. This allows you to utilize all of the heat your system produces but prevents you from drinking water that has sat in your heating pipes all summer. Any size heat exchanger will provide this barrier, but the larger the plate, the more heat will pass through. Flat Plate Heat Exchangers 10" x 20"

  • 11/14/07 Preparation for winter freezes

  • If you live in a colder climate, your water pipes may be susceptible to freezing. The majority of your plumbing is safely inside your house where freezing is not an issue, but a sillcock on the outside wall of your house is exposed to the elements and can freeze during the colder winter months. Since water expands as it freezes, a frozen sillcock can burst your pipes causing water damage to your house. You have 2 solutions to avoid this mishap. First, you can turn off the inline valve and drain the water out of an existing sillcock during the winter months. Or for added convenience, you can install a frost-free sillcock that will help keep water away from the cold, outside elements. A frost-free sillcock contains a long stem that places the actual water shut off about 10 inches inside the house. This keeps still water away from the elements. Frost Free Sillcocks

  • 11/6/07 Pressuretrol cut-out settings

  • When your pressuretrol reaches its cut-out setting, steam moves out into the system and condenses in the pipes. This makes the overall system pressure drop. When the system cycles down to the cut-in pressuretrol setting, the pressuretrol will re-start the burner if the thermostat is still calling for heat. If the thermostat isn't calling for heat, the burner will remain off, and the steam pressure will drop to zero (atmospheric pressure). Generally, the pressuretrol should be set to turn the burner on at one-half psi and turn it off at the lowest possible pressure required to heat the furthest heating source in your home. That pressure should be under or around 2 psi in a properly functioning system. Honeywell Pressuretrols

  • 10/10/07 Tankless Water Heater Savings

  • Tankless water heaters are more energy efficient than conventional heaters because they heat water as it is needed. Storage type water heaters have to keep water hot 24 hours a day which results in standby energy losses. The amount you can save on your energy bills depends on how much hot water you use. "For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand water heaters can be 24%-34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.
